In the quest to develop patience, one must prioritize rational thinking over emotions.

Self-regulation plays a crucial role in fostering appropriate responses, especially in today’s fast-paced world. To wait without judgment requires discernment and a deliberate focus on cognitive input, rather than emotional outbursts.

True patience means waiting without frustration, which ultimately elevates our decision-making, actions, and relationships with stakeholders.

Understanding Impatience

So, what exactly is impatience?

Impatience
/ɪmˈpeɪʃ(ə)ns/
noun

The tendency to be impatient, irritable, or restless, often characterized by restlessness, frustration, agitation, nervousness, eagerness, keenness, greed, longing, yearning, irritability, intolerance, annoyance, discontent, dissatisfaction, displeasure, and shortness.

Is Impatience an Emotion?

Impatience is a surge of energy driven by underlying emotions or the perception that something isn’t happening quickly enough (Wikipedia, Sep 1, 2021).

This list of unpleasant feelings and behaviors highlights the relationship between low emotional intelligence (EQ) and high impatience. Self-regulation helps manage these emotions, while our habits also play a role. Much impatience arises from disruptions to our personal, professional, and organizational routines. We tend to become impatient when things don’t go according to plan, which disrupts our expectations.

Various factors, such as time, priorities, people, tasks, and the success of others, contribute to our level of patience. This is why we may be patient with some things and impatient with others. Identifying your triggers is crucial to mastering patience.

Key Strategies to Overcome Impatience

Developing patience is an essential skill that can benefit all aspects of our lives.  Let’s explore some recommended strategies to overcome impatience. By implementing these strategies, you can improve your emotional intelligence and build stronger relationships.

  1. Recognize your triggers: Understand what makes you impatient and develop strategies to manage those situations.
  2. Focus on self-regulation: Cultivate emotional intelligence by learning to control your emotions and adapt to changing circumstances without judgment or disappointment.
  3. Embrace mindfulness: Practice staying present in the moment and letting go of expectations that might lead to impatience.
  4. Cultivate empathy: Understand the perspectives and feelings of others, which can help you become more patient in challenging situations.
